A containment facility typically includes a barrier system comprising several layers of geosynthetic materials followed by a leachate collection drainage system and, finally, waste which is placed on top of this barrier system.

Biological and chemical reactions in the waste result in elevated temperatures which significantly reduce the service life of synthetic polymer materials and increase total solute escape to the environment.

This effect increases with time as precipitate and biological clogging of the leachate collection system takes place and leachate mounding occurs, further concentrating heat on the composite liner.

Accelerated diffusion of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) through even composite liners

The patented Aquatan ENHANCED BARRIER SYSTEM brings a coupled solution to these problems.


Using a fan or similar device, a fluid is drawn through the leak detection system or leachate collection system under negative pressure.

By drawing a fluid under negative pressure, at a controlled temperature and with a controlled moisture content, the detrimental temperature to which the geosynthetic layers are normally exposed is thus reduced, significantly extending their service life and resulting in hydration/rehydration of the clay component.

The Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) that diffuse through the composite liner are removed by the fluid continuously passing through the leak detection or leachate collection drainage system, preventing their further diffusion into the environment.
